SkyDay Fridays FAQs

Why are SkyDay Fridays so valuable for children?
It has never been more important for our children to reconnect to nature and to each other. SkyDay Fridays offers a safe and imaginative way to do that through art. Learn more about why we created SkyDay Fridays

What ages are SkyDay Fridays for?
SkyDay Fridays may be suitable for children of any age.

Do we have to do the projects on a Friday?
Not at all! We email you the new project on the first of the month. Choose a day that’s best for you.

What is the ‘Golden Rule’?
Our Golden Rule isKeep It All About The Sky’! No trees, lamp posts, people, horizons…..you get the idea! JUST SKY and, of course, the things that pass through it, like birds!. This may require some simple cropping of images before posting. Check out the other Sky Galleries to see what gets in and check out our Quick tips for posting to Sky Day Project video for additional help.

Why is the Golden Rule important?
We created the Sky Galleries to inspire everyone to look up and experience the magic of our sky and develop a personal connection to it. We only care about the things we are connected to and we all need to care a great deal more about the health of our sky. We also want to keep the project super appropriate for young people and families to take part. Imagine what we might see if we allowed people to post anything they want, like social media platforms do! This does, however, mean that some beautiful art with trees, buildings, cars, smoke stack etc. get filtered out :(

Can we only post sky photos or can we post paintings and drawings too?
The first month is all about observing and documenting the sky’s dynamic changes in photography. This will build a Sky Gallery of varied skies. In subsequent months, we explore the sky through painting and drawing and poetry etc. and then your students post those works too!

How do we post to our Sky Gallery?
It’s easy! Once you’ve signed up for your Sky Gallery and received our ‘Welcome to SkyDay Fridays!’ email (please read this email throughly!) simply go to skydayproject.org and use the ‘Upload Photos’ button top right to post to your Sky Gallery. Your Sky Gallery will appear in alphabetical order in the drop down menu. Here’s our quick ‘How to Post to Sky Day Project’ video:

Why is my image flipped? Backwards? Upside down?!
Our software does NOT reorient images! If yours are upside down or flipped check to see if you have ‘Orientation Lock’ switched on in your device. This makes it look like you have stopped the device from reorienting the image when you taker the photo BUT the camera still remembers the true orientation of the image to your device and posts it accordingly.

My image didn’t get in! Why not?
If you posted a jpg and you don’t see it in your Sky Gallery then it likely includes objects like people, trees, buildings etc. and therefore broke our one Golden Rule - Keep It All About The Sky! This is true for photographs as well as drawing and paintings. If you would like to re-post it then take a look at your picture and crop out anything connected to the ground!

How do we explore other Sky Galleries?
Sky Day Project is interactive so your class can explore all the other Sky Galleries sent in worldwide by using the ‘Refine Gallery’ button top left. However YOUR Sky Gallery will only appear in this menu after you start posting!

Should students write their names in their work?
If students wish to ‘sign’ their work we suggest using initials or first names only.

How and when will we be told if my class wins the zoom meeting with Nicole?
We will notify the winning class by May 15 using the email you gave us on the Sky Gallery sign up form.

Who is SkyDay and why are you doing this?
We are a team of artists and scientists united by the desire to help the next generation develop a more personal relationship to sky and environment. We are all volunteers, we aren’t selling anything and everything we offer is free.
