This art competition is for groups of 10+ students ages 15-18. Your students will create a group art exhibition together that explores their ideas about climate and the environment and then showcase their work online in their own art gallery. It’s a great way for students to engage in a creative dialogue with each other and their peers worldwide. Entry is free, the online gallery is free and we’ve designed the projects to fit easily into a busy school schedule.

Who takes part?
Art classes who care about the environment and environmental science classes who value integrating art into the classroom.

When does the competition run?
From Sky Day (Sept. 23, 2022) to Nov. 30, 2022. Sign up by Sept. 20.

What do my students do?
Each student contributes an artwork to the group show by responding to one of three projects (description below). We estimate they will spend about three hours total on their project. Posting to their gallery is easy.

One student will volunteer for the leadership role of curator. This person will check in with your artists from time to time, make sure all work gets posted by the Nov. 30, 2022 deadline and help the group come to a decision about what to do with any cash prize they might receive. Good for their resume!

How will my students know what to do?

On Sky Day (Sept. 23, 2022) we will email you a link to a new page on our website to share with your students that will give them everything they need to know to have a positive and creative experience together.

I have a busy schedule. How much of my time will this take?

As group leader you review our rules, sign up for the gallery, and then point your students to the projects page when we email it to you. Whether you incorporate their projects into your curriculum in some way, grade their work or offer it as an after school project is all up to you! Posting the art to your gallery is easy. What are the three projects?

Call and Response. Students will hear an extraordinary poem on climate and environment from a famous poet and then respond with a poem of their own.

Become an Environmentalist Artist. Students reflect on the role of the environmentalist artist and respond with an artwork of their own.

Witness a Changing Environment. Students document the changing sky above their community every day in photography and reflect on how that practice impacts them.

GROUPS MUST COMPLETE ALL THREE PROJECTS TO BE ELIGIBLE TO WIN OUR PRIZES.

Tell me about the prizes.

Grand Prize: Interview with star journalist Sasha Ann Simons and a $500 check for your class to make a donation to an environmental cause of their choosing.

Two Consolation Prizes: A $250 check for your class to make a donation to an environmental cause of their choosing.

Three Honourable Mentions: Celebration of your class’s efforts in our content and messaging.

Prizes announced week of December 5th.

Who is SkyDay and why are you doing this?
We are a team of artists and scientists united by the desire to help the next generation develop a more personal relationship to climate and environment. We are all volunteers, we aren’t selling anything and everything we offer is free.
